The Zamfara State Government has provided 50 buses to the state chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) as part of efforts to improve public transportation and support economic empowerment.
The buses were officially handed over to beneficiaries on Wednesday at the Government House in Gusau.
A statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, said the vehicles were provided to NURTW members under the Zamfara State Loan Scheme to enhance transportation services across the state.
Governor Dauda Lawal, while presenting the buses, said the initiative was aimed at improving the efficiency and safety of the public transport system while creating opportunities for transport operators.
He explained that the buses were procured at a total cost of N27.39 million each, with the state government providing a 20 per cent subsidy of N5.478 million per vehicle.
According to the governor, each beneficiary will repay N21.912 million per bus over a period of 44 months.
“The buses would be distributed to the NURTW on loan under the Zamfara State Loan Scheme. The union has agreed to participate in the identification, supervision and repayment of its members’ vehicles,” Lawal said.
The governor also announced the commissioning of five fire trucks acquired to strengthen the state’s emergency response system.
He said the new firefighting equipment would improve the capacity of the state fire service to respond quickly to emergencies and protect lives and property.
Lawal directed relevant ministries, departments and agencies, as well as beneficiaries, to provide quarterly reports on the maintenance and utilisation of the assets.
He warned that vandalism, misuse or diversion of the vehicles and equipment would not be tolerated, stressing that the assets belong to the people of Zamfara State.
