United Nigeria Airlines has been admitted as a full member of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA), marking a significant step in the airline’s efforts to strengthen its regional partnerships and contribute to the growth of Africa’s aviation sector.
The membership expands AFRAA’s presence in Nigeria, one of Africa’s largest and fastest-growing aviation markets, while providing United Nigeria Airlines access to industry-wide advocacy, market intelligence, operational improvement initiatives, networking opportunities and joint business collaborations.
The development comes amid ongoing efforts by African airlines to deepen integration through the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), an initiative aimed at promoting the liberalisation of air transport across the continent and improving connectivity among African countries.
AFRAA Secretary General, Abderahmane Berthé, welcomed the airline into the association, describing Nigeria as a key aviation market and United Nigeria Airlines as a representation of the resilience and ambition of African carriers.
He said the airline’s membership would enable it to benefit from AFRAA’s advocacy programmes, commercial intelligence, capacity-building initiatives and collaborative projects designed to support the advancement of Africa’s aviation industry.
Speaking on the milestone, Executive Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, said joining AFRAA was a major achievement for the airline and the Nigerian aviation sector.
Okonkwo said the membership would provide a stronger platform for the airline to collaborate with other African carriers, promote regional connectivity and support efforts towards achieving a more integrated and competitive aviation market on the continent.
With its admission into AFRAA, United Nigeria Airlines becomes part of a network of more than 40 member airlines across Africa. Collectively, AFRAA members account for over 85 per cent of international traffic operated by African airlines.
The association continues to serve as a platform for African carriers to address industry challenges, promote cooperation and advocate for policies that support sustainable aviation growth across the continent.
