The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit (Taskforce) has intensified its enforcement against illegal commercial motorcycle operations, impounding 309 motorcycles during a coordinated operation along the ECOWAS Road corridor and clearing environmental infractions around Alaba Rago and surrounding communities.
The operation, conducted with the support of the Lagos State Police Command and coordinated by the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, was part of the state government's ongoing efforts to enforce the ban on commercial motorcycles on highways and other restricted routes.
Areas covered during the exercise included Orile-Iganmu, Suuru-Alaba, Mile 2 Underbridge, Mazamaza, Festac First Gate, Iyana-Ira, Abule-Ado, Alakija, Iyana-Iba, Alaba Rago, Old Ojo Road and Okoko Bus Stop.
In addition to seizing the motorcycles, enforcement officials dismantled illegal kiosks, makeshift stalls, shanties and other unauthorised structures. They also removed abandoned household items, illegally displayed building materials, domestic animals obstructing public spaces and other encroachments identified as contributing to traffic congestion and environmental degradation.
The Taskforce said the exercise was designed to improve road safety, ease traffic movement and strengthen security by eliminating activities that provide cover for criminal elements operating within the affected corridor.
It added that the impounded motorcycles would be processed for forfeiture to the Lagos State Government through the courts in accordance with the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.
Speaking after the exercise, Chairman of the Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, said the operation revealed widespread violations of environmental and traffic regulations, stressing that illegal ticketing, street trading and the activities of recalcitrant commercial motorcycle operators had continued to undermine public order.
He reaffirmed the agency's resolve to sustain enforcement operations across the state, warning that anyone flouting the law would be brought to justice.
"Our commitment is to ensure a safer, cleaner and more orderly Lagos. We will continue to enforce the law without fear or favour until compliance is achieved," Akerele said.
