The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit (Taskforce) has dispersed a private anniversary celebration held on a public road in Yaba, warning residents against converting streets into event venues.
The enforcement operation took place on Lawani Street, off University Road, where organisers had taken over one lane of the road for the event, obstructing traffic on a key diversion route being used by motorists because of ongoing road construction in the area.
According to the Taskforce, officers were deployed after receiving intelligence about the illegal road closure. On arrival, they dismantled the barricades and removed canopies, chairs, tables and other items placed on the roadway to restore normal vehicular movement.
Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, said the agency would continue to enforce laws prohibiting the obstruction of public roads, describing the practice as unacceptable and detrimental to commuters.
He said public roads are meant for the use of all residents and should not be taken over for private ceremonies, regardless of the occasion.
Akerele warned that anyone found blocking roads for social events would be prosecuted in accordance with the law, urging event organisers to make use of approved event centres or obtain the required permits where necessary.
He also appealed to members of the public to report activities that threaten public safety, obstruct traffic or violate environmental regulations, assuring Lagosians that the Taskforce remains committed to maintaining order and ensuring the free flow of traffic across the state.
