The Delta State Government has donated five operational vehicles, popularly known as "Green Marias," to the Delta State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) to strengthen its operational capacity and enhance security across the state.
The vehicles were presented on Wednesday at the Government House in Asaba by the Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, on behalf of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Speaking during the presentation, Onyeme said the donation underscored the administration's commitment to supporting security agencies and reinforcing the state's justice and security architecture.
He noted that the vehicles would improve the mobility of correctional personnel, enhance operational response, and strengthen supervision and coordination within the command.
According to him, an effective correctional service requires adequate logistics and reliable transportation to efficiently discharge its responsibilities.
The deputy governor added that the intervention aligns with the Enhanced Peace and Security pillar of Governor Oborevwori's MORE Agenda, stressing that although the Nigerian Correctional Service is a federal agency, it plays a vital role in maintaining peace and public safety in Delta State.
He reaffirmed the state government's commitment to collaborating with federal security agencies to protect lives and property, while urging the command to ensure proper maintenance of the vehicles and use them strictly for official duties.
Responding, the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Sylvester Nwackuche, represented by the Delta State Controller of Corrections, Chuke Idoko, expressed appreciation to the state government for the gesture.
He assured the government that the vehicles would be deployed effectively to improve the operational efficiency of the command.
The presentation ceremony was attended by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, commissioners, and other senior government officials.
