Delta to Acquire 50 CNG Buses, Build Mega Bus Terminals to Boost Public Transport

 

The Delta State Government has approved the purchase of 50 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, the acquisition of electric vehicles, and the construction of a modern mega bus terminal in Asaba as part of efforts to strengthen the state's public transportation system.

The approvals were among key decisions reached at the State Executive Council meeting held in Asaba.

Commissioner for Transport, Onoriode Agofure, who briefed journalists after the meeting, said the 50 CNG buses would serve as the backbone of the state's MORE Mass Transit Scheme, designed to provide safe, affordable, and efficient transportation for residents.

Agofure said the planned mega bus terminal in Asaba would serve as the operational hub for the mass transit scheme and help eliminate the numerous roadside and informal motor parks around the Koka Junction area.

According to him, the project is expected to improve traffic management, enhance the aesthetics of the state capital, and provide a more organised transport system. He added that land for the terminal has already been acquired, while necessary processes are underway to commence construction.

The commissioner noted that upon completion, all existing informal and private motor parks in the area would be relocated to the new terminal.

He further disclosed that a similar mega bus terminal would be developed in Warri following approval by the Federal Government, which he said was secured through the intervention of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

Agofure revealed that a transportation study conducted across major cities in the state, including Asaba, Warri, Ughelli, Agbor, Sapele, Abraka, and Oleh, showed that more than 19,000 people commute daily within Delta State.

The study, he said, indicated that about 80 per cent of commuters rely on public transportation, while only 20 per cent use private vehicles, highlighting the need for greater investment in the state's transport infrastructure.

He added that Governor Oborevwori considers transportation a critical driver of economic and social development, noting that efficient movement of people and goods remains essential for commerce, education, and access to workplaces.
