The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Cross River State Sector Command, has commenced a statewide enforcement operation targeting traffic offenders in a bid to reduce road crashes and promote safer driving practices across the state.
The special intervention patrol, scheduled to begin on Monday, June 29, will cover major highways and urban roads, with focus on violations such as vehicle overloading, driver’s licence offences, fake or improper number plates, and driving under the influence of alcohol or psychoactive substances.
Sector Commander of the FRSC in Cross River, Corps Commander Innocent Tommy Etuk, announced the operation in a statement issued in Calabar, saying the exercise was part of the Corps’ efforts to improve road safety and encourage responsible behaviour among motorists and transport operators.
Etuk warned commercial drivers and transport operators against overloading vehicles with passengers or goods, describing the practice as a major contributor to vehicle instability, brake failure, tyre bursts and fatal crashes.
He stressed that all motorists must possess valid driver’s licences, noting that the document confirms that a driver has received the necessary training and certification to operate safely on public roads.
The FRSC commander also raised concerns over the use of fake, obscured, unregistered and improperly displayed number plates, stating that proper vehicle identification was essential for effective traffic management, crime prevention and national security.
He disclosed that patrol teams would deploy alcohol detection devices, known as Alcolyzers, for random checks, adding that motorists found driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs would be arrested and prosecuted in line with existing laws.
Etuk assured residents that the enforcement exercise would be carried out professionally and transparently while respecting the rights of road users.
He urged motorists and transport operators to cooperate with FRSC personnel and comply with traffic regulations, stressing that road safety requires the collective responsibility of all road users.
