Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has said the ongoing Damaturu flyover project will help reduce traffic congestion, minimise road accidents, and address recurring flooding challenges in the state capital.
The governor said the project was initiated to resolve transportation and drainage problems at the city’s major intersection, popularly known as “The Cross,” while improving movement within Damaturu.
In a statement issued by his Director General of Press and Media Affairs, Mamman Mohammed, Buni explained that the intersection was originally constructed in 1973 to serve motorists travelling along the Kano-Maiduguri and Bayamari-Biu highways.
He noted that the road infrastructure had remained largely unchanged despite population growth, increased vehicular activities, and the creation of Yobe State in 1991.
According to the statement, the state government awarded the flyover contract to TRIACTA Construction Company in 2025 with a one-year completion timeline and a commitment to fully fund the project.
The scope of work was later expanded to include the reconstruction and expansion of a 6.6-kilometre road corridor stretching from the 5:30 Petrol Station to the 27th August Stadium.
Buni also highlighted other urban renewal projects in Damaturu, including the completed Modern Market, which is already operational, as well as an ultra-modern plaza and a new motor park currently nearing completion.
The governor said the modern motor park would feature passenger hostels, a mechanic garage, shopping facilities, a clinic, police station, bank, and fire service station.
The Yobe State Government said arrangements were ongoing for the commissioning of the flyover as construction work approaches completion.
