Kazakhstan has reopened two fully modernised railway stations in the Kyzylorda region as part of a nationwide initiative aimed at upgrading railway infrastructure, improving passenger services and strengthening the country’s transport network.
The renovated stations located in Zhanakorgan and Shieli were officially inaugurated during a ceremony attended by Kyzylorda Region Governor Murat Yergeshbayev and Vice Minister of Transport Zhanibek Taizhanov, alongside other government officials and transport sector stakeholders.
The rehabilitation of the two stations forms part of Kazakhstan’s broader railway modernisation programme, which seeks to transform ageing transport facilities into modern passenger hubs capable of meeting growing travel demands and supporting regional development.
Speaking during the inauguration, Vice Minister Taizhanov said the upgrading of railway stations along the important corridor would play a significant role in promoting economic activities, tourism development and improved mobility across the region.
He noted that modern railway infrastructure was essential to enhancing connections between southern and western parts of Kazakhstan while also strengthening links to international transport corridors that support trade and transit activities.
The upgraded stations have been equipped with improved passenger facilities designed to provide greater comfort, convenience and accessibility. The renovation works covered extensive improvements to station buildings, including upgraded facades, refurbished interiors and modernised engineering systems.
The projects also included improvements to heating, water supply and electricity infrastructure, ensuring that the facilities meet modern operational standards and provide a better experience for passengers throughout the year.
Additional features introduced at the stations include modern waiting areas, clearer passenger navigation systems and dedicated facilities for people with reduced mobility, making rail travel more accessible and convenient for a wider range of passengers.
Officials said the improvements are expected to increase the efficiency of passenger services, strengthen regional connectivity and contribute to Kazakhstan’s ambition of becoming a major transit hub linking Asia and Europe.
The Kyzylorda region is currently benefiting from the wider railway station upgrade programme, with a total of 10 stations across the region scheduled for modernisation.
The reopening of the Zhanakorgan and Shieli stations follows similar rehabilitation efforts in other parts of Kazakhstan, including the recent reopening of two upgraded railway stations in East Kazakhstan Region.
Authorities said the continued investment in railway infrastructure reflects Kazakhstan’s commitment to developing a reliable, modern and passenger-friendly transport system that supports economic growth and improves connectivity across the country.
