The Federal Government has announced a ban on the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okada, and tricycles on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and all bridges across Lagos State.
The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Mr Olufemi Dare, disclosed the restriction, stating that the measure was aimed at protecting the newly constructed coastal highway from misuse and ensuring its long-term durability.
Dare said the enforcement of the ban would commence this week, adding that the decision was necessary to preserve the quality of the major infrastructure project and maintain safety standards for road users.
He explained that the restriction covers the coastal highway as well as bridges across the state, while warning that indiscriminate parking of trucks and articulated vehicles along the corridors would no longer be tolerated.
The Federal Ministry of Works also prohibited the dumping of refuse along highway routes, describing the practice as harmful to the environment and damaging to public infrastructure.
Dare warned that violators would face strict enforcement actions as authorities move to maintain order and protect the road network.
He disclosed that warning signs had already been installed along the highway to inform road users of the new regulations, while task force personnel would be deployed to strategic locations to ensure compliance.
Describing the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as a world-class infrastructure project, the controller urged residents and motorists to cooperate with government efforts to protect the facility.
He stressed that proper maintenance and responsible use of the highway would extend its lifespan and preserve its value for Nigerians.
