President Bola Tinubu has commissioned the newly completed Collector Road C01 and its accompanying bridge in the Institution and Research District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), describing the project as a key step towards addressing infrastructure deficits and improving connectivity in the nation's capital.
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the commissioning ceremony in Abuja on Wednesday, the President said the 1.5-kilometre road links major institutions, including the Body of Benchers, Nile University and Baze University, and will improve mobility and security for students, lecturers, legal practitioners and other road users.
Tinubu explained that the project was initiated following an appeal by the Body of Benchers during a recent Call to Bar ceremony. He noted that the Federal Government approved emergency funding to fast-track its completion.
According to him, the infrastructure, which includes streetlights, pedestrian walkways and a bridge, reflects the administration's commitment to completing projects under its Renewed Hope Agenda.
"We are not just looking at physical roads and buildings; we are looking at a promise kept," the President said, adding that infrastructure development remains a critical driver of economic growth, investment and job creation.
He also commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for the pace of infrastructure delivery in Abuja, while applauding engineers, contractors and workers involved in the project.
Tinubu urged residents and the benefiting institutions to protect and maintain the infrastructure to ensure its longevity.
Earlier, Wike said the road project was executed in line with the President's directive to extend development to all districts of the FCT. He thanked Tinubu for supporting infrastructure development across the territory and for removing the FCT Administration from the Treasury Single Account (TSA), a move he said improved access to funds for capital projects.
The Minister of State for the FCT, Mariya Mahmoud, described the commissioning as another milestone in the administration's infrastructure drive and praised the technical teams for delivering the project.
Providing details of the project, Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Richard Yunana Dauda, said the project comprises a 1.5-kilometre Collector Road C01 and a 60-metre, three-span bridge linking the Body of Benchers to the Nile University axis, providing an alternative route and improving access within the district.
