LAGOS — The National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) has begun discussions on introducing a Loss of Licence Insurance scheme aimed at improving the welfare and financial security of aviation professionals in Nigeria.
The proposal was discussed during a meeting between NAAPE's National Executive Council and representatives of ETG and Epicure Insurance Brokers at the Legend Hotel in Lagos.
The engagement focused on the structure of the specialised insurance product, including its coverage, eligibility requirements, underwriting capacity, claims process and examples of its implementation in other countries.
According to the association, the proposed insurance scheme is designed to provide financial support to pilots and licensed aircraft engineers whose careers are disrupted by the suspension or permanent loss of their professional licences due to medical conditions or other qualifying circumstances.
The meeting also explored additional insurance and risk management solutions that could strengthen NAAPE's welfare programmes for aviation professionals.
Speaking during the session, NAAPE National President, Captain Bunmi Gindeh, said the association remains committed to developing practical initiatives that enhance the welfare, financial stability and professional resilience of its members.
He noted that the association's responsibilities extend beyond advocating for better working conditions to addressing emerging risks capable of affecting the careers and livelihoods of aviation professionals.
Gindeh observed that a professional licence represents years of rigorous training, experience and sacrifice, adding that losing such a licence through circumstances beyond an individual's control could have significant financial consequences for affected professionals and their families.
He said the engagement was intended to expose members to global best practices in professional welfare and financial protection while encouraging collaboration with relevant stakeholders to strengthen confidence in Nigeria's aviation industry.
The NAAPE president also reaffirmed the association's commitment to promoting aviation safety, professionalism and the sustainable development of the country's aviation sector.
Also speaking, the Chief Executive Officer of Epicure Insurance Brokers, Mrs Oyinpreye Aigbogun, commended NAAPE for initiating discussions on the specialised insurance scheme.
She said the engagement provided an opportunity to examine insurance and risk management solutions tailored to the needs of pilots, engineers and other aviation professionals, noting that the association's interest reflects growing awareness of the need to safeguard the careers and financial well-being of aviation personnel.
Both organisations agreed to continue discussions on making specialised insurance products more accessible to aviation professionals in Nigeria.
NAAPE said the initiative underscores its commitment to expanding members' welfare beyond traditional labour advocacy while supporting the long-term resilience of the nation's aviation industry.
