ABUJA — The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has partnered with Egypt to deploy technology for the establishment of a Smart National Transport Databank aimed at improving transport management, road safety and policy planning across Nigeria.
The Corps said the initiative would provide real-time transport data to support infrastructure development, regulatory oversight, crash analysis, traffic management and evidence-based policymaking.
The collaboration was strengthened during an official visit to Cairo by the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and other senior Nigerian government officials. The visit followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) and Asia Arab Investment (AAI) in Abuja on June 15.
Speaking on the initiative, Mohammed described the project as a major step towards building a technology-driven transport system in Nigeria. He said the integrated databank would enhance crash prediction, improve traffic management, support effective deployment of personnel and strengthen compliance monitoring.
According to the Corps Marshal, the future of transport governance depends on accurate data, innovation and strong institutional collaboration.
A key outcome of the Cairo engagement was a proposal for Egypt's ARCORP to establish Driver Training and Development Centres across Nigeria through a public-private partnership involving the FRSC and NITT. The centres are expected to improve driver education and raise professional standards among motorists.
Speaker Abbas reaffirmed the commitment of the House of Representatives to provide the necessary legislative support for the project, describing it as an important step towards Nigeria's digital transformation and the modernisation of its transport sector.
