Enugu Bans Traffic Task Force Operations on Federal Highways

ENUGU – The Enugu State Ministry of Transport has banned all traffic task force operations on federal highways across the state with immediate effect as part of efforts to curb the activities of fake enforcement officials accused of extorting motorists.

The directive was announced in a statement issued by the Commander of the Enugu State Traffic Management Authority (ESTMA), Kenneth Ugwu.

According to Ugwu, the decision followed reports of individuals posing as officials of the Ministry of Transport to harass and extort road users on federal highways.

He said the ministry had constituted a special enforcement team to identify and apprehend those behind the illegal operations, noting that their activities had tarnished the ministry's image.

Ugwu disclosed that some suspected fake task force operatives had recently been arrested in different parts of the Enugu metropolis while allegedly extorting motorists. He added that the suspects are currently being interrogated and would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The traffic management authority urged motorists and members of the public to report any encounters with suspected fake traffic officials or other complaints to the office of the ESTMA Commander.

Ugwu warned that anyone found harassing or extorting motorists under the guise of traffic enforcement would be arrested and made to face the full weight of the law.
