Akwa Ibom Receives First Batch of CNG Buses to Boost Public Transportation

 

The Akwa Ibom State Government has received the first batch of 20 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses as part of efforts to modernise the state’s public transportation system and improve mobility across its 31 local government areas.

Governor Umo Eno, who received the buses at the Government House in Uyo, described the development as a major milestone in the administration’s transport reform agenda.

The buses are the first phase of a 50-unit CNG vehicle programme initiated by the state government to provide safer, more efficient and affordable transportation services for residents.

Eno said the initiative was part of the government’s broader infrastructure development plan aimed at creating a reliable transport network while maximising the benefits of the state’s improved road infrastructure.

He disclosed that the next phase of the programme would involve the completion of bus terminals, installation of vehicle tracking systems and deployment of an electronic ticketing platform to improve efficiency, accountability and service delivery.

The governor commended the state Ministry of Transport, contractors, security agencies and other stakeholders for their efforts in ensuring the successful delivery of the buses.

He said the project represents a shift from planning to implementation in the government’s infrastructure drive, urging residents to remain supportive as the administration continues to deliver sustainable development projects.

Commissioner for Transport, Dr Anthony Luke, said the arrival of the CNG buses reflected Governor Eno’s commitment to transforming the transport sector and improving the quality of life of residents.

Luke noted that the investment aligns with Nigeria’s growing transition towards cleaner and more affordable energy solutions in transportation, as governments and businesses increasingly adopt CNG-powered vehicles as alternatives to petrol and diesel.

The deployment of the buses is expected to reduce transportation challenges, improve passenger experience and contribute to a more efficient public transport system across Akwa Ibom State.
