Ondo NUJ Condemns Delay Of Akure-Owo-Benin Road Project

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ondo State Council, has expressed concern over the slow pace of work on the ongoing dualisation of the Akure-Owo-Benin Road, particularly along the Akure/Ogbese axis, urging the contractor to accelerate work to reduce hardship for motorists.

The union made the appeal in a communiqué issued at the end of its monthly congress held at the NUJ Press Centre, Alagbaka, Akure, where members deliberated on issues affecting the state and the nation.

The communiqué was signed by the Ondo State NUJ Secretary, Olaoluwa Meshack, following the congress presided over by the state chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite.

The journalists said the contractor should ensure easy vehicular movement before removing existing asphalt on the highway, adding that one carriageway should be completed and opened to traffic before work begins on the second lane.

“The congress frowned at the slow pace of work on the Akure-Owo-Benin road dualisation project, particularly the Akure/Ogbese axis, and urged the contractor handling the federal project to make way for easy vehicular movement before removing the tarred road.”

The union also called on the contractor to complete one section of the road before extending construction activities to another, noting that the current approach had worsened traffic challenges for commuters and other road users.

“The contractor should ensure the completion of one carriageway before commencing work on the second lane to minimise disruption and ease movement for motorists,” the communiqué stated.

The congress further appealed to the Ondo State Government to fast-track ongoing road projects across the state in the interest of residents, while urging authorities to address indiscriminate parking along Arakale Road to improve traffic flow during the construction of the Akure flyover.
