Fresh tension has gripped Ibadan following allegations that Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, led supporters to disrupt activities at several real estate development sites across the city.
The incidents come weeks after Igboho’s reported return to Nigeria following a period abroad.
According to eyewitness accounts, Igboho was seen at construction sites in Ibadan accompanied by a convoy of vehicles and supporters.
In one of the latest incidents on Monday, a prominent real estate firm’s project site was allegedly invaded, resulting in the temporary suspension of construction activities. Staff members reportedly vacated the premises amid concerns over their safety.
Sources within the affected company claimed that demands were made during the visit, with warnings issued that operations would remain halted pending certain settlements. The claims have, however, not been independently verified.
The situation has generated concern within Ibadan’s business community, particularly over allegations that Igboho invoked the name of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, to assert authority during the confrontations.
Witnesses alleged that he claimed to be acting with the monarch’s backing.
There has been no official statement from the Olubadan’s palace regarding the matter at the time of filing this report.
In response to the disruption, the affected real estate firm has reportedly engaged the services of Afe Babalola & Co to seek legal redress. The company is also said to have petitioned the Nigeria Police Force, alongside other authorities including the Oyo State Government and relevant federal institutions, alleging threats to its operations and requesting protection.
Legal analysts note that the move signals a determination by investors to protect their businesses through the courts, stressing that disputes relating to land or development rights must be resolved within the framework of the law.
Igboho previously made headlines in 2021 following a raid on his Ibadan residence by security operatives, after which he left the country. He has remained a prominent figure in Yoruba self-determination advocacy.
As petitions mount and legal processes commence, stakeholders in Ibadan’s property sector say they are closely monitoring developments, calling on authorities to ensure the safety of lives and investments while upholding the rule of law.
