OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA Lagos,
A tragic road accident occurred in the early hours at Majidun, inward Ogolonto, along Ikorodu Road, leaving one woman dead and six others critically injured. The crash involved a Volkswagen commercial bus (registration number EPE 494 XM) and a stationary tipper truck.
According to LASTMA, preliminary investigations reveal that the commercial bus, which was transporting passengers to a scheduled programme in Ogijo, suffered a sudden brake failure while reportedly travelling at high speed. The driver lost control of the vehicle, causing a violent collision with the tipper truck, which had stopped roadside to purchase diesel.
The impact claimed the life of an adult female passenger on the spot. Five female passengers and one male sustained severe, life-threatening injuries and were rushed to Benic Special Hospital for urgent medical care. The body of the deceased was transferred to General Hospital, Ikorodu, for official documentation.
In a swift response, operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) pursued and apprehended the tipper truck driver, who reportedly attempted to flee the scene. The bus driver was also arrested. Both individuals have been handed over to the Ipakodo Police Division for thorough investigation.
LASTMA personnel promptly cleared the wreckage from the roadway to restore traffic flow toward Ikorodu Garage.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the family of the deceased. He also wished the injured a speedy and full recovery.
Mr. Bakare-Oki urged motorists to exercise caution, avoid overspeeding, and remain vigilant on the highways, emphasizing that excessive speed significantly reduces a driver’s ability to respond to sudden mechanical failures or unexpected hazards.
He reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to safeguarding lives and promoting safer driving practices across Lagos State.
For emergency assistance, members of the public can contact LASTMA’s toll-free hotline: 0800-005-27862.
