The Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro — now upgraded to the Federal University of Technology, Ilaro — Dr. M.A. Akinde, has called on youths in Yewaland to prioritise education as a way of complementing the developmental strides of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi), representing Ogun West Senatorial District.
Dr. Akinde made the call on Saturday, November 15, 2025, while speaking with members of the League of Yewa-Awori Media Practitioners (LOYAMP) during the grand finale of the 2025 Oronna Ilaro Festival.
According to him, the numerous projects facilitated by Senator Adeola in Ilaro and its environs would only achieve their intended impact if the younger generation commits themselves to academic excellence.
He cited two major projects recently completed in the town: the upgrading of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro to a Federal University of Technology, and the construction of an ultra-modern clubhouse at the Recreation Club, Ilaro. The new clubhouse, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, was commissioned during the festival by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibrin Barau.
“Education today requires more dedication, and our youths must embrace it,” Dr. Akinde said. “If they neglect education, others from different places will flood the newly upgraded university. Our youths must be part of this progress for the university to thrive.”
Reflecting on his personal journey, Dr. Akinde noted that his achievements were made possible through education. “I had my secondary education here in Ilaro, without knowing I would one day become Rector. It happened because I took my studies seriously. I have seen the gains of education, and I advise our youths to do the same,” he added.
Speaking on the significance of the Oronna Ilaro Festival, the Rector described it as a cherished annual cultural event that unites sons and daughters of Ilaro from within and outside the country. He urged indigenes to continue supporting and contributing to the festival’s growth.
He further emphasized that the festival serves as an important platform to showcase the cultural heritage of Ilaro, which, if well harnessed, could boost government tourism initiatives and internally generated revenue.
Commending Senator Adeola, Dr. Akinde praised the lawmaker’s contribution to the upliftment of the Recreation Club, Ilaro. He described the newly renovated facility as a historic achievement and a legacy that will be remembered for generations.
