The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has announced that it will unveil its 20-year strategic blueprint for traffic management in Lagos, which aims to recalibrate the systems in anticipation of intensifying urbanisation and future vehicular demands.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, stated this on Wednesday at a press briefing held in commemoration of the agency’s 25th anniversary during the second traffic conference in Lagos.
According to Giwa, the epochal occasion of the Silver Jubilee transcends ceremonial festivities; it is an opportunity for solemn retrospection, thoughtful acknowledgement of institutional milestones, and a renewed affirmation of the unwavering commitment to public service excellence in the ever-evolving terrain of traffic management.
He said that from its inception, LASTMA has metamorphosed into a formidable force within the urban transportation ecosystem, progressively improving commuting times, fostering road safety, enhancing enforcement protocols, and championing transportation reforms that have garnered both national and international acclaim.
“Our evolution is a testament not merely to policy but to people—specifically, to the astute leadership and institutional foresight of those who have stewarded this Agency over the past quarter-century,” he said.
He said, “Today, LASTMA proudly stands tall, bolstered by a workforce exceeding 4,000 dedicated operatives, strategically deployed across Lagos to ensure traffic flow, dislodge congestion, respond to emergencies, and enforce existing road traffic laws.
“I assert with conviction that LASTMA is no longer merely an intervention agency—it is a reference model for traffic management, emulated across Nigeria and studied internationally.”
He highlighted some of the achievements of the agency within the past 25 years, including digital transformation and technological innovation, capacity enhancement and professional development, excellence in emergency response and Incident management, public enlightenment and advocacy engagement, inter-agency synergy, regulatory harmonisation, infrastructure expansion, and operational visibility.
He noted that the agency has harnessed cutting-edge technology to elevate our operations—through the deployment of Traffic Management Solutions (TMS), real-time surveillance infrastructure, a fully digitized Command and Control Centre, and the utilization of Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems. These tools have significantly improved institutional transparency, minimised physical contacts and altercations, as well as empowered data-centric enforcement.
He said the agency has also intensified efforts in civic education and public awareness through diverse platforms, including radio, television, digital media, school advocacy programmes, and engagements with faith-based institutions. Campaigns such as “Drive Safely, Stay Alive” have yielded commendable attitudinal change among motorists and transport operators alike.
He said that the forthcoming second Lagos Traffic Conference, scheduled for Monday, 15 July 2025, at the iconic Eko Hotel and Suites, will constitute the intellectual fulcrum of our anniversary celebration.
He noted that the high-level convocation will assemble a constellation of policymakers, transportation technocrats, academics, development experts, and civic leaders—both domestic and international—to examine prevailing mobility challenges and devise pragmatic, forward-thinking solutions.
With the theme ‘Enhancing Traffic Efficiency and Safety on Lagos Roads: Challenges, Opportunities and Innovations,’ he said the conference underscores the strategic alignment with smart governance, participatory policymaking, and digital innovation.
He mentioned that the conference will also serve as the launch platform for our ambitious 20-Year Strategic Blueprint for Traffic Management in Lagos, which seeks to recalibrate the systems in anticipation of intensifying urbanisation and future vehicular demands.
