reenLight Initiative with support from Youth for Road Safety (YOURS), through the Local Action project is implementing a project on Advocacy for Road Safety and Meaningful Youth Involvement in Nigeria.
This project aimed at improving road safety by stimulating meaningful youth involvement through intergenerational dialogue; empowering youths leaders with skills necessary to champion road safety advocacy; create awareness on the new Decade Plan of Action; and showcase the impact of road safety on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
It is organised as a prelude to the very first High-Level Meeting on Improving Global Road Safety happening in New York between 30 June and 1 July 2022.
According to Simon Patrick Obi, Executive Director, GreenLight Initiative, 'Over the years, GreenLight has implemented various road safety intervention in Nigeria which aimed at promoting the safety of road users especially young people and other vulnerable road user.
"The Local Action project will further boost our efforts in promoting road safety and advocating for meaningful youth participation in road safety. GreenLight Initiative is committed to ensuring young people become safe on the road.
"We are also proud to be partnering with Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) - an initiative of the U.S. government to groom African leaders. This partnership will support our efforts in promoting road safety among young people. We are also happy to be working with Road Users Development Network of Nigeria to implement this project in Abuja." He added.
Patrick reitrated that the World Health Organization WHO, through the Global Status Report revealed that road traffic fatalities are the number one single biggest killer of young people around the world, resulting into the deaths thousands of Youth annually.
Stressing that it is unfortunate that these tragic incidents keep repeating yet no concrete actions are taken to mitigate them. Scholars have established that such reoccurrence could be attributed to youth inadequate knowledge, awareness and information about the impact of road traffic crashes. This has hampered their safety on the road.
"There is no doubt that these young people have a role to play in ensuring that they are protected from road traffic crashes as they make use of the road." Patrick said.
GreenLight Initiative is a nonprofit working to promote road safety, health, environment, and sustainable development.
