The Nigeria Police Force has intensified the enforcement of the Inspector-General of Police's directive against vehicles operating without registration number plates or with covered, altered, or obscured plates, leading to the impoundment of at least 120 vehicles in Ogun and Delta states.
The enforcement exercise, aimed at improving vehicle traceability, strengthening intelligence gathering, and denying criminals the anonymity often exploited in committing crimes, resulted in the arrest of 89 drivers in Ogun State and the impoundment of 31 vehicles in Delta State.
In Ogun State, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the operation was carried out in line with the nationwide directive issued by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
According to him, the 89 motorists were apprehended for violating the directive, with administrative and legal actions already initiated against the offenders, including prosecution where necessary.
Babaseyi explained that the exercise is part of a strategic preventive policing initiative designed to enhance public safety, support investigations, and improve crime prevention across the state.
He noted that the enforcement would continue statewide, warning that violators would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The police spokesman also disclosed that the command recorded successes in separate anti-crime operations, arresting two suspected armed robbers identified as Abdusalam Adam and Israel Salako while recovering a stolen Toyota Camry and two motorcycles.
He said operatives of the Ogere Division, working alongside the Ogun State So-Safe Corps, local vigilantes, and community members, foiled a robbery operation at Akuro Phase I, Ogere Remo, after armed men invaded a residence and carted away motorcycles, mobile phones, cash, and other valuables.
The swift response by security operatives forced the suspects to abandon the stolen motorcycles and flee into a nearby bush. One suspect, Abdusalam Adam, was later arrested, while investigators recovered a knife, an expended cartridge, and a broken padlock from the scene.
In another operation, officers attached to the Ajuwon Division arrested Israel Salako following a robbery incident at Baale Akinosi Area, Ajuwon.
The suspects had stolen mobile phones, jewellery, power banks, a laptop, and a Toyota Camry before police launched a coordinated pursuit that forced them to abandon the vehicle. Efforts are ongoing to arrest other members of the gang and recover the remaining stolen property.
Meanwhile, the Delta State Police Command impounded 31 vehicles during a coordinated enforcement operation targeting traffic and vehicle registration violations across Agbor.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the operation, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, covered Agbor metropolis, major highways, border communities, and entry and exit points between Delta and Edo states.
The impounded vehicles were found to be operating without registration number plates, displaying obscured or covered plates, carrying expired vehicle documents, or committing other traffic-related offences.
Edafe stated that the affected vehicle owners would be prosecuted in courts of competent jurisdiction.
He added that the exercise was intended to strengthen police visibility, enforce compliance with traffic regulations, and prevent criminals from exploiting unregistered or improperly registered vehicles.
The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, reaffirmed the command's commitment to intelligence-led policing and sustained enforcement operations, urging motorists to comply with all vehicle registration and traffic regulations to promote public safety and effective law enforcement.
