CALABAR — Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has flagged off the construction of the 10-kilometre Ugboro–Ukpah–Afrike Road in Bekwarra Local Government Area, reaffirming his administration's commitment to expanding infrastructure and driving economic development across the state.
The governor, represented by his deputy, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, performed the official flag-off on Saturday, describing the project as another milestone under the administration's People First agenda.
Speaking at the ceremony, Odey said the road would improve access to rural communities, ease the transportation of agricultural produce, stimulate commercial activities, enhance access to healthcare and education, and create new economic opportunities for residents.
He noted that the project demonstrates the government's resolve to fulfil its campaign promises through the delivery of impactful infrastructure.
The deputy governor commended the Executive Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Area, Hon. Egbung Odama, Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Michael Odere, and the member representing Bekwarra State Constituency, Hon. Charles Omang, for their collaborative efforts in facilitating the commencement of the project.
Odey also urged community leaders, youths, and other stakeholders to cooperate with the contractor to ensure timely completion of the road. He further encouraged the contractor to prioritise local content by engaging qualified local workers and sourcing construction materials locally where feasible.
In his remarks, Bekwarra Council Chairman, Hon. Egbung Odama, described Governor Otu as a leader committed to fulfilling his promises, saying the road project reflects the administration's determination to address the area's long-standing infrastructural challenges.
He thanked the governor for including Bekwarra in the state's development agenda and appealed to the government to also consider the construction of the Abuochiche–Akwurinyi Road.
Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Pius Ankpo Edet, assured residents that the project would be executed according to approved engineering standards and completed within the tenure of the current administration. He also called on the benefiting communities to support the contractor throughout the construction period.
Also speaking, Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Michael Odere, said the state government had made adequate financial provisions to ensure uninterrupted execution of the project until completion.
Goodwill messages were delivered by Hon. Charles Omang, former Head of Service Mr. Timothy Akwaji, the Paramount Ruler of Bekwarra Local Government Area, and the Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Cross River State Chapter, Comrade Emmanuel Olayi. They commended the state government for the intervention and pledged the full support of their communities to ensure the successful execution of the project.
The event culminated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony performed by the deputy governor, officially marking the commencement of construction work on the road.
