The Lagos State Government, in partnership with global ferry association Interferry, has intensified efforts to improve safety standards in the state’s water transport sector through the ongoing Ferry Safety Development Programme (FSDP).
The initiative, implemented by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), recently concluded its second training module, with about 50 participants receiving practical seamanship training at the Sea School, Apapa.
The latest module focused on key areas including ropes and knots, mooring and anchoring techniques, and deck maintenance. The training combined self-paced learning, virtual mentorship and practical field exercises aimed at improving participants’ technical skills and enhancing safety practices in ferry operations.
As part of the programme, participants took part in a virtual “Ask the Expert” session with Interferry mentor and Vice President of Marine Operations at Northumberland Ferries Limited, Mr. Jeff Joyce, who provided insights into seamanship, maritime safety, leadership and international operational standards.
The practical exercises, coordinated by Engr. Ukeme Sunday and facilitated by Sea School coordinator, Dr. Ekundayo, alongside experienced maritime instructors, exposed participants to real-life ferry operation procedures.
Participants were grouped into teams for practical drills covering rope identification, rope handling, knot tying, line management and the application of knots during ferry operations. The exercises were designed to promote teamwork, operational competence and improved safety awareness.
The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Blue Economy, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, said the hands-on training complements the programme’s virtual and self-learning components by providing participants with exposure to global best practices and real operational environments.
Emmanuel commended Lagos Ferry Services Company Limited (LAGFERRY) and Thesaurus Bay Limited for providing vessels used during the practical sessions, while appreciating Interferry for sponsoring the initiative.
He also praised the facilitators for their contributions towards strengthening professional capacity within the state’s maritime sector.
LASWA reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to improving waterway safety, developing skilled ferry operators and promoting a sustainable and efficient water transportation system.
The FSDP, regarded as Africa’s first structured 18-month professional development programme for ferry operators, is designed to enhance technical competence, leadership skills and safety culture among maritime professionals.
The programme is expected to progress into its third module in July, with focus on ferry safety management, emergency preparedness, risk management and international safety practices.
