The Lagos State Taskforce has intensified its enforcement against illegal commercial motorcycle operations, impounding 278 motorcycles during a weeklong operation across parts of the state.
The crackdown was conducted to enforce the Lagos State Government’s ban on commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, from operating on highways, major roads, and other restricted routes under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.
The agency said the operation was aimed at restoring order on the roads, improving public safety, and supporting ongoing efforts to strengthen security across Lagos.
The enforcement team visited several areas identified as hotspots for illegal motorcycle activities, including Ikorodu, Agric Bus Stop, Festac First Gate, Mazamaza, Iyana-Iba, Idimu Road, Egbeda, Iyana Ipaja, Ikotun Roundabout, Ijaiye, Berger Bus Stop, Ojodu, Akowonjo, Igando, LASU-Iba Road, and Pipeline Road, among others.
The Taskforce disclosed that many operators were apprehended for flouting the state’s restriction order by riding on prohibited routes, while some were found engaging in activities considered dangerous to public safety.
According to the agency, some commercial motorcyclists were caught conveying illicit substances as well as hazardous materials such as petrol and gas. Others were reportedly involved in the unsafe transportation of school children and toddlers on busy roads.
At the end of the exercise, the Taskforce confirmed that 278 motorcycles had been impounded, adding that the action had helped improve compliance and restore sanity in affected areas.
The agency stated that the seized motorcycles would be presented for forfeiture to the state government through the courts in line with existing transport regulations.
Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, said the agency would sustain the enforcement campaign, insisting that illegal activities would not be tolerated in the state.
“We will not be cowed or fold our arms and allow people of criminal intent to overrun Lagos or surrender to their illegalities,” Akerele said.
The Taskforce assured residents that it would continue to monitor compliance with transport laws and take necessary action against violators.
