The Lagos State Taskforce has commenced preparations to clear illegal trading activities and structures along the Alaba Rago axis of the Mile 2–Badagry Expressway as part of efforts to restore sanity and improve safety on the busy corridor.
The agency, working with other enforcement authorities, said the planned operation would focus on removing traders and occupants operating on highways, walkways, road medians and setbacks in violation of the state’s environmental regulations.
The Taskforce said the decision followed growing concerns over the environmental and security challenges linked to activities around the area, including the proliferation of makeshift shops, illegal buildings, waste accumulation and other unregulated activities.
The Alaba Rago corridor, which forms part of the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, is a major route used by commuters, residents and travellers heading towards the Seme border. The government said restoring order in the area had become necessary due to its strategic importance.
During a sensitisation exercise conducted for traders and residents in the area, Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, issued a 72-hour ultimatum for illegal occupants to vacate the affected locations.
Akerele said the state government had engaged stakeholders before moving to enforce compliance, stressing that trading on highways, walkways and road setbacks remained prohibited under Lagos environmental laws.
“Everyone knows that trading on highways, walkways, and setbacks is illegal. However, because of the Lagos State Government’s people-oriented approach and inclusive governance policy, we have engaged all relevant parties before taking action,” he said.
He added that enforcement would begin after the expiration of the notice, warning that violators would have their goods seized and could face further legal consequences.
The Taskforce chairman said the exercise was part of the government’s broader commitment to ensuring a cleaner environment, safer roads and improved urban management across Lagos.
The Lagos State Taskforce, under the supervision of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, said the operation aligns with the administration’s THEMES Plus Agenda aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and public safety.
