OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos
Youth leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State have distanced themselves from a viral video claiming they endorsed Hon. Tunji Akinosi for re-election to the House of Representatives in 2027, describing the development as false and politically motivated.
In a statement issued after a roundtable meeting held on Easter Sunday, the youth leaders said their attendance at a consultation meeting convened by Akinosi did not amount to an endorsement of his second-term ambition.
“We attended the meeting in good faith as loyal party stakeholders. At no point did we collectively or individually endorse Hon. Tunji Akinosi for re-election,” the statement read.
The leaders alleged that individuals at the event collected their names and official designations under the guise of documentation, only for the information to be used in producing what they described as a manipulated video.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Hon. Dada Oloyede, Chairman of Ward 1 Youth Leaders, said the video was doctored to mislead the public.
“A closer look at the video reveals clear inconsistencies between the listing of our names and the accompanying endorsement chants. This is a deliberate attempt to distort facts,” he said.
Similarly, Hon. Seriki, Ward 2 Youth Leader, condemned the act, noting that such tactics undermine democratic values and reflect political desperation.
The youth leaders further disclosed that a majority of ward youth leadership within the constituency have instead expressed support for High Chief Olanrewaju Bashorun, popularly known as Larrybash, as their preferred candidate for the 2027 House of Representatives election.
According to the statement, six out of eight youth leaders present at the discourse reaffirmed this position, while indicating that at least 13 of the 16 ward youth leaders and party executives share the same stance.
They called on party members, the media, and the general public to verify politically sensitive information before dissemination, warning against the dangers of misinformation in the build-up to the 2027 elections.
“We are in a critical political period where misinformation can easily be weaponised. We urge the public to rely on credible sources and verify all claims before taking action,” the statement added.
The APC youth leaders reaffirmed their commitment to transparency, party unity, and democratic principles, while advocating issue-based political engagement as preparations for the next general elections gather momentum.
