Abeokuta, Ogun State — A former member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Barrister Aina Akinpelu, has formally declared his intention to contest the Ogun West senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, promising effective representation, quality lawmaking, and continuity of developmental strides in the district.
Akinpelu made the declaration during a media parley with members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun West Independent Chapel, where he outlined his vision and legislative priorities for the senatorial district.
Describing the Nigerian Senate as a “sacred institution,” the senatorial hopeful emphasized that only capable, vibrant, and articulate individuals should occupy such a position. He noted that representation at the upper legislative chamber requires competence and a deep understanding of governance to effectively serve the people.
The aspirant commended past and present senators from Ogun West for their contributions to the district’s growth, singling out the incumbent lawmaker, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, for what he described as outstanding performance.
According to Akinpelu, Adeola’s record of achievements has set a high benchmark, adding that any successor must be prepared to sustain and build on the existing developmental efforts.
“It will be difficult for anyone to match his achievements, but whoever emerges must be ready to continue the good work for the benefit of our people,” he said.
Highlighting his experience, Akinpelu recalled his eight-year tenure in the Ogun State House of Assembly from 2011 to 2019, where he served as Chairman of the House Committee on Health for over six years. He also chaired the Committee on Information, Culture and Strategy, and served as Vice Chairman on Agriculture and Commerce, alongside membership of several other committees.
He expressed confidence in his legislative competence, noting that his background as a trained lawyer and former lawmaker positions him well for the responsibilities of the Senate.
“Lawmaking comes naturally to me. The primary duty of the Senate is to enact laws that promote good governance, and I am well prepared to contribute meaningfully in that regard,” he stated.
Akinpelu stressed the need for improved legislation to address societal challenges, pointing out that while Nigeria has numerous laws, there is still a gap in effective enforcement and clarity. He called for more targeted and responsive laws that address emerging issues and improve citizens’ welfare.
He also highlighted the importance of laws that protect cultural values and promote social stability, urging lawmakers to engage more with the public to ensure that legislation reflects the needs and realities of the people.
The senatorial aspirant further acknowledged the challenges faced by both the media and law enforcement agencies, calling for reforms and clearer legal frameworks to enhance their effectiveness.
Reiterating his commitment to the people of Ogun West, Akinpelu pledged to sponsor bills and initiatives that would improve living standards, protect lives, and foster sustainable development across the district.
The 2027 general elections are expected to witness keen political contestations across Ogun State, particularly in the Ogun West senatorial district, where stakeholders continue to emphasize the need for experienced and result-oriented representation.
