Members of the Obamoro family of the Iga-Obamoro - Ilufun, Ijana quarters in Ota, Ogun State on Thursday organised a major event to honour the life and times of Obamorolugbe Obamoro, their Patriarch who settled and became a successful ruler in Ota town some 300 years ago.
According to Prince Babatunde Opeifa, the head of the entire Obamoro family, who spoke with reporters said, Obamoro was a very powerful man who used his powers for the liberation of many people, opening up the Ota community as a major trade route during the booming slave trade, which extended to Badagry, where he had trading settlements.
He said, "Our great patriarch, Obamorolugbe Obamoro was a king that was so powerful and prosperous in his days, having several slaves who were used in exchange for European paraphernalia through barter, they were used build several structures, expand businesses empire and promulgate several wars which he won for his people.
"Obamoro, even in death has being providing guidance and answers to our wishes whenever we invoke his spirit, he has remained faithful to us his descendants, ensuring that we win every legal battle on his landed properties that strangers try to take away from the family." He said.
Prince Opeifa who is popularly known as 'Just of Peace', JP, added that the family is a ruling house in Ota, having an inalienable right to the obaship throne, stressing that the family is however not in any contention with Oba Abdulkabir Obalanlege, the Olota of Ota who is duly chosen by their ancestors and have the full support of their family.
In the morning, the entire members of the family who came from various places across Nigeria and Overseas, congregated at the tomb of Obamoro to pour libations, make enchantments, playing drums, singing traditional songs, dancing along, with the aim to invoke his spirit.
In his submission, Musbau Salisu, a descendant of Obamoro also, who doubles as the Chief priest of the family, said, this is the fourth of such celebrations carried out in honour of their great patriarch, attracting all the sons and daughters across the globe.
