The Vehicle Inspection Office has introduced a compulsory driving test for applicants for driving licenses.
The test is aimed at improving driving proficiency and reducing accidents and road carnage.
Chief Vehicle Inspection Officer in Enugu State, Val Chime, disclosed this in an interview with journalists on the introduction of compulsory driving test on Wednesday.
Chime said it is designed to check for practical proficiency and determine the class of vehicle budding drivers would be allowed to drive.
“The VIO driving test is mandatory to check people going through proxies and cutting corners while in driving schools.
“It will also ensure that unfit drivers and ungrounded drivers do not hit the roads and cause accidents, carnage and destruction of lives and property,” Chime said.
He revealed that the VIO would soon revoke the driving licenses of new drivers who fail to pass the driving test.
“The VIO will soon apprehend and revoke driving licenses of such fresh drivers who did not pass the VIO driving test or have driving licenses that are not their supposed class to ensure the safety of lives,” he said.
According to him, the VIO and the state transport ministry are working closely with the Federal Road Safety Corps to prosecute reckless drivers and those whose negligence causes accidents.
Chime noted that the VIO has a weekly Mobile Traffic Court that tries offenders and gives those who feel that VIO officers have breached their rights the opportunity to seek the court’s redress.
He disclosed that the state government has also invested heavily in road infrastructure, with Governor Peter Mbah establishing a Special Automated Road Worthiness Inspection and Testing Centre in Emene, Enugu.
Chime lauded the governor’s efforts, saying, “Now, we have a metropolis where you hardly have a pothole, and this is good for the 200 CNG long buses to be introduced into the state after a few weeks.”
