A faction of the National Union of Road Transport Workers NURTW, headed by Alhaji Ibikunle Baruwa as the President, has in a press statement co-signed by him and Com. Suleiman Musa, General Secretary, refuted a recent statement credited to Alh. Najeem Yasin that the judgement of the National Industrial Court and that of the Court of Appeal has been upturned by the National Industrial Court.
The statement released on Wednesday reads in part; "attention of the authentic leadership of National Union of Road Transport Workers has been drawn to very malicious and disturbing falsehood being peddled by Alh. Najeem Usman Yasin, to the effect that the judgement of the National Industrial Court and that of the Court of Appeal has been upturned by the National Industrial Court.
"The truth is that the information and claim which has gone viral is completely false and without basis.
"In fact, it is the biggest LIE from the pit of hell and can only come from a desperate and drowning man like Najeem Usman Yasin.
"It is obvious that Najeem Usman Yasin in his insatiable lust for power has being indulging in all manner of illegal and dubious practices, so as to continue to syphon the funds of the NURTW into his private pocket." The statement added.
It would be recalled in a landmark decision, the National Industrial Court in March 2024 in Abuja reinstated Alhaji Ibikunle Baruwa as the President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) for a second term.
The court’s ruling then effectively resolved the leadership deadlock within the NURTW and invalidated the authority of the Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede-led caretaker committee.
The presiding Judge, Justice O.O. Oyewumi affirmed the legitimacy of the Zonal Delegates Conference, where Baruwa was re-elected on May 24, 2023.
Furthermore, the court officially recognized the Quadrennial National Delegate Conference held on August 23, 2023, as the valid assembly for inaugurating national officers.
That ruling also brought to an end the tenure of the former President, Comrade Najeem Usman Yasin’s involvement in the day-to-day affairs of the union, although he was affirmed to retain his role as chairman of the board.
In the same vein, the Court of Appeal in Abuja in November 2024 also affirmed the March 11 judgment by the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), recognising Ibikunle Baruwa as the president of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
A three-member panel, presided over by Justice Hamma Barka dismissed an appeal filed against the NICN’s judgment by seven individuals led by Alhaji Najeem Usman Yasin.
In the judgment delivered on November 8, the appellate court held that the appeal was devoid of merit.
The press statement further reads; "The fact is that the National Industrial Court cannot upturn its own judgement; how much more that of Court of Appeal which is the final Arbiter on Industrial matters.
"We are by this Press Release are calling on all valued members of the NURTW across the Country to disregard the destructive information and claim as being peddled by Alh. Najeem Usman Yasin and his co-travelers." The statement affirms.
