In line with the Welfare programme of the Rotary Club of Victoria Garden City for the 2022-2023 Rotary year, Rotary Club of Victoria Garden City on Saturday, November 26, provided relief materials to over 500 indigent people mostly residents of the Ikota Community in Lekki Ajah, Lagos.
Speaking about the programme, Rotarian Omotunde Olaleye, the Imaginative President of the Club reiterated that the project was in line with the Seven Areas of Focus of Rotary International which include Welfare as one of the pillars.
According to him, "The aim of this programme is to provide, food, drinks and Clothings, in fulfilment of Rotary's aim of putting smiles on the faces of people. As a Club in the Rotary family it is expected that we familiarise ourselves with the people around us, with the aim to make them happy in line with our seven areas of focus, inclusive of having Welfare programmes, which is part of what we are doing today.
"We are approaching the end of the year, and due to the economic situation, many out there cannot afford food or clothings for the yuletide season and meet other basic needs, leading to many cases of depression in our society. So in our own way, we already have plans of actions to reachout to such individuals or groups around our catchment areas of Badore, Ikota and Ajah communities who have been enjoying our presence in the last 26 years and would continue to enjoy it," he said.
Rotarian Omotunde explained that they had a target of reaching 200 people with the relief materials, but about 500 people turned up, with more people still showing up at the event to get reliefs for themselves and their families.
He said, "Our initial target was for 200, eventually we had to service over 500 people who got packs of Rice, Noodles, Tomato Pastes, Drinks Clothings and Shoes, while calls are coming in for us to reach out to others."
